The company owners are directly related to the city the restaurant got its start in in Destin, Florida, as Leonard Destin, founded the town in 1835. The restaurant group has several Panhandle locations, and pride themselves in serving fresh, sustainable seafood. The Navarre location is the newest after opening in 2018, and the beach backyard is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest, with fresh cocktails, craft beer and games. Drift offers a casual fine dining experience from the second story of the building that also houses the Casino Beach Bar and Grille, one of its sister restaurants.

The bill would prohibit factory fish farms in federal waters, keeping their legacy of trouble away from Florida’s coast. But that perfect day at the beach could be gone forever if we continue to pump nitrogen pollution into our coastal waters and fuel the growth of harmful algal blooms, such as the red tide that has ravaged large areas of the Florida coast. The federal government has also proposed a number of what they call “aquaculture opportunity areas” in the Gulf of Mexico, which would designate certain offshore areas as favorable for the location of industrial fish farms. Three of these areas are located off Florida’s west coast in the area offshore from St. Pete south to Naples.

There are a huge number of restaurants that offer breathtaking waterfront views in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The park, formerly known as Premier Adventure Park, added its Caribbean restaurant and tiki bar in 2020 when it rebranded itself as Laguna’s. Now the site offers beachfront seating, Caribbean-inspired entrees and a myriad of drink options to go along with the park’s ropes courses, zip trails, go-karts and more.
While the restaurant specializes in fresh seafood, like the Gulf shrimp po'boy and redfish tacos, it also offers a wide variety for land-lovers, like the waygu pier burger and marinated steak tacos. Shaggy’s Pensacola Beach is a laid-back waterfront bar and grill that offers a seafood-centric menu, frozen daiquiris, an extensive craft beer list and more. The island-style vibes offer waterfront views from every seat in the establishment. But there’s also a good bill being considered by Congress, called the Improving ARCTIC Act. This bill would put resources into enhancing local and regional seafood supply chains for both wild-caught and responsibly farmed seafood. In Florida, that means wild fisheries like shrimp, lobster and grouper and farmed seafood like the clams and oysters that are sustainably grown in coastal bays and, unlike fish farms, actually improve water quality through their filtering.
When the federal government held a public comment period on the proposal, about 80% of those who commented were opposed. Of all the states, Florida is on the front line of the battle to keep industrial fish farms from overwhelming our nation’s coasts. That’s because two fish farms proposed for federal waters off the continental U.S. are both on Florida’s Gulf coast. The first — proposed offshore from Sarasota — has even received permits to build, but is temporarily held up by a legal challenge by conservation and consumer organizations.

Red Fish Blue Fish overlooks the Santa Rosa Sound and focuses on serving simple dishes that use fresh ingredients. Calvert's in the Heights bills itself as a one-of-a-kind English-themed restaurant, and while it's not quite on the water, it sits on Scenic Highway and offers a unique, elevated view of the Pensacola Bay. The view isn't the only thing to take in, the outside dining area out back has cornhole and kids games. The Fish House's upscale dockside dining experience overlooking Pensacola Bay and Seville Harbor isn't one to be forgotten. Casino Beach Bar and Grille sits right on top of Pensacola Beach, with its sugar-white sands that lead right up to the restaurant. This is the place to go if you want to experience the sights and sounds of the Gulf of Mexico, island vibes and live music.
While Atlas Oyster House is The Fish House's sister restaurant, shared deck with a waterfront view and all, executive chef Jason Hughes has transformed the menu to make the restaurant a destination of its own. At Atlas, you can expect to see creative, off-the wall options, like Bloody Mary oyster shooters and Maine lobster corn dogs. But Atlas isn't just for the seafood lovers, as you don't want to miss the bourbon barbecue Clarke County Cookout Cheeseburger. You don't need to sit out on the patio to catch a sweltering Gulf of Mexico sunset, thanks to the window-heavy design of the Beach House Social dining room. The menu highlights fresh, local ingredients, from the fresh Gulf fresh to the fruit juices in the cocktails. The Perdido Key Oyster Bar Restaurant & Marina is located right on the intracoastal waterway in Perdido Key, making it a great spot for waterfront views and getting a look at Big Lagoon State Park.
A second proposed farm off Pensacola Beach is in federal permitting, with public hearings still to come. With over half a million visitors a year, locals and tourists alike enjoy the cuisine as well as the views from the restaurant’s waterfront location. But first we have to educate our elected officials, who are wrestling with competing bills on aquaculture.
